CEDAR POINT & NIAGARA FALLS -- AUGUST 2001


Travel Strategy:

  1. Kid friendly!!!!
  2. Familiar destinations
  3. Reasonably close destinations
  4. Attention to cost (as in fewer high priced meals and more basic accommodations)
  5. Access to pool
  6. Close to multiple attractions


The Trip, Day by Day

Sunday, August 12, 2001

  • Traveled from Troy, MI (6:45 AM) to Cedar Point (10:30 AM) stopping only for breakfast
  • Arrived later than expected due to "detour" (aka, wrong turn)
  • Stayed to left in order to drive around the park and park by The Breakers
  • In the park and enjoying rides and attractions at 11:00
  • Started on the right this time putting priority on the kids attractions first (last year started on the left)
  • Checked into The Breakers around 3:00 pm, room had a view of the water park and roller coasters -- and of the dumpsters (attention to cost, meant no view, basic accommodation)
  • Went back and stayed in the park until 11:00 pm closing

Monday, August 13, 2001

  • Checked out and left Cedar Point at about 9:00 am
  • While it appeared to be smart to skip breakfast and get away from the Sandusky/Cedar Point area ASAP -- it was difficult to find a place to eat once out of the area
  • Finally ate late breakfast/early lunch in Mentor area Burger King at about 11:00 am
  • Crossed over at the Peace Bridge in the Fort Erie area
  • Arrived at Fort Erie attraction about 2:30 and took the 3:00 pm tour
  • Started towards Niagara Falls area on the Niagara Parkway (travels from Fort Erie to Niagara on the Lake)
  • Stopped at the Lighthouse restaurant for light meal
  • Checked into Quality Inn Fallsway in the middle of the Clifton Hill tourist area -- the same place we stayed in 2000.

Tuesday, August 14, 2001

  • Crossed over to US side for much of the day
  • View Tower
  • Prospect Point
  • Tommy and Clark go on Maid of the Mist
  • Terrapin Point
  • Lunch at Top of the Falls Restaurant
  • Evening of Clifton Hill people watching sitting outside Pizza Hut

Wednesday, August 15, 2001

  • Morning adventure in Clifton Hill, including Movieland, the Fun house, and Dinosaur golf
  • Made use of the Niagara Parks People Movers to travel to several close by attractions
  • A horse drawn carriage tour of the Botanical Gardens
  • The floral clock for a quick picture
  • A stop at the Table Rock area
  • Late Lunch at Victoria Park
  • Dinner at Table Rock, to see the illumination of the falls

Thursday, August 16, 2001

  • Final trip through the Funhouse at Clifton Hill
  • Walked down to the Hershey store
  • One last trip down to the falls
  • Went to Niagara on the Lake
  • Stopped for Amy's Canadian and Chinese food on the way home.
