Hi Tommy:

I wanted to thank you for having this site and posting your story. One year ago I found this site and made a connection with someone else who had signed your guestbook. She and I both had lost our grandsons in 2007 at 23 and 24 weeks gestation. Her friendship has gotten me through alot of painful grief. I would never have found her without your help. You don't have to post this on your site. I just wanted you to know that you are helping a lot of people with information and a very encouraging life. May you live your life completely and full of happiness. Beth

Hi Tommy:

I have read your incredible story and am so happy you have grown to such a wonderful and healthy boy. I found this site because my grandson is a preemie and I was looking for more information, your site popped up. (I didn't know what desat meant)

You were much smaller than my little Marley James who is only 2 months early and weighs in at a hugh 5 1/2 pounds now. Still having troubles with breathing but will be going home tomorrow.

Thank you Wanda

Hi Tommy: My 1 1/2 pound 680g 25 weeker turned 3 in November and started preschool! I wish I was as internet savvy as your dad so that I could give people hope too. This site helps so much and was such an inspiration when I needed it. I still like to come here to guess what my kid might do at 13!

Hi Tommy:

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and making this great website. It's nice to here that Tommy is doing great, we love hearing story's like this. Our son, Jackson, was born at 28 weeks after I was involved in a car accident. He was 3 lbs and 14.6 inches long, from what I understand that is big for 28 weeks. He was born in Sherman, TX and careflighted to Dallas a few hours after he born. Monday he will be 7 weeks old, he still requires the nasal cannula to breath it varies from 21% to 28%. 3 weeks after he was born we got a really big scare he had gotten NEC, which is an infection that destroys the intestines. They had to do the surgery in his room since he was too unstable to move to an operating room. Before his surgery they thought he wouldn't make it since they thought his gut had been totally destroyed, so they asked us if we wanted him baptised and of course we did. Our family came up to the hospital and we prayed for our little angel to make it. He was only 3 weeks old but we couldn't imagine our lives without him. It seemed like eternity when the doctor finally came in the room to tell us that he had enough intestine they could salvage. All we heard is that he was still alive. They had to disconnect his intestines to let the middle section heal and they brought them up to the skin. He is doing good today with the occasional set backs, but they were able to get him out of the isolette and put him in a big by crib. He now weighs 4 lbs 6.7 ounces. The doctors say they will be able to reconnect the intestines at the end of the month. So we are praying to be home in February. Thank you for sharing your story, it helps so much to be able to relate to somebody. It's hard when all your friends around you are having normal and healthy pregnancies and births. Again thank you for making this website, Austin and Jennifer Lewter

Hi Tommy:

It makes me happy to see how grown up and handsome you are. You must get tired of people telling you this, but, hey, we can't help it. Today my daughter in law went into the hospital at 25 weeks. We are hoping that Baby Zachary will not be born for a while longer so that he has the best chance for strong survival. But seeing pictures of you then and now gives us hope that he will have a great outcome just as you have. Thanks for sharing. Hopeful Grandma in California

Hi Tommy:

I found your website while looking for volunteer opportunities to help new parents of premature infants. Your story is so inspirational and I hope you're able to keep it up.

Our daughter gabrielle was also born prematurely at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak (10/19/06). She had a 1 month stay in the NICU...

Keep sharing your story. God Bless!

Hi Tommy:

I came across your website. I enjoyed looking at the before and after pics. I have preemie twin girls in the NICU right now. They were born 16 weeks early and weighed 1 lb, 5 oz and 1 lb, 7 oz. We're dying to take them home from the hospital. We have a website for our twins if you're interested. http://babies.valleyauctioncenter.com. Thanks for your website. It truly gives the rest of us hope. We will someday get to take our babies home!

Hi Tommy:

I want to thank you and your parents for such an inspiring website. My first child was just born on November 28th 2006 at 29 weeks. She was 3lbs 6oz.She was born early for the same reason as you and was also delivered by an emergency c-section. Marisa is still in the NICU. Off of oxygen and over 5lbs. They just took the N/G tube out so that she can try bottle feeding on her own demand. The neonatalogist says she can come home if she does well this weekend! I came across your website on one of those sleepless nights where I was up worrying. I find myself returning quite often and rereading your story. It's so reassuring! Thank you again! Dream Big

Hi Tommy: Hope you had a great birthday celebration this week. You don't know me, but I found your link on the site of a newly premature baby in Ohio, whose parents are friends of mine. That little baby is now home with his parents and just beginning to enjoy life out of a hospital. It sounds and looks like you are doing very well for yourself. I hope you enjoy middle school next year. I am a school guidance counselor, and grades 6-9 are my favorite years of all to teach.

Hi Tommy:

I´m very glad you´re doing so fine today! :)

I´m a nurse working on a NICU in Germany. As your dad already wrote there are many preemie pages on the web nowadays- but I like especially yours because one gets a longtime view on the outcome of a micro-preemie.

So keep up the good work :

I wish you and your family all the best.

Hi Tommy:

I have just found your sight and was overwhelmed at the willingness of people to share their experiences of having a premie baby. I myself have had two premie babies, my first 'TRINITY' we only found out we were expecting 20 weeks into the pregnancy which was a big enough shock but to have my waters break 2 weeks later was something else! Against everything we were told about the labour being imminent it was actually another 8 weeks and plenty of steroid injections later before the onset of labour occurred and she was born a very happy and healthy 3lb 5oz with no problems. My second daughter wasn't quite as patient and when my waters broke again at 24 weeks and 5 days it took her about 20mins to arrive. She was intubated straight away and looked in quite a bad way having broken her arm during the birth and weighing a tiny 1lb 8oz. She was ventilated for 5 weeks and then on CPAP for a further 5 weeks until an abrasion on her nose from the tubes rubbing let in an infection and she actually turned out to be harbouring meningitis. Our hopes began to sink at this point as the light at the end of the tunnel just seemed to be even more distant than it had been in three months but to our amazement she bounced back and was home 5 weeks later along with her oxygen equipment (which with all its gadgets was just playtime to her 2 yr old sister).  We also had the added joy of trying to keep hearing aids in her tiny little ears as she was diagnosed with profound loss of hearing in both ears just before being discharged. Between keeping oxygen canulas in and stopping Caymen from eating her hearing aids i have to say that those 6 months were a bit of a blur and i feel that i missed out on a chunk of both of my childrens lives as i was too busy being nurse for my baby to enjoy them. When Caymen was 14 months old she came of her oxygen and within months gained her full hearing to the audiologists amazement, we had been so busy dealing with the problems we had been instructed to that we hadn't noticed that Caymen wasn't really progressing with her mobility and shortly after she was diagnosed with diplegic CP. I found this quite hard to cope with at first but then realized that thinking and worrying about what lay ahead of us was actually much more frightening than just getting on and living with it. I still have days when i feel a bit down about it as non of my friends have ever had to deal with anything like this and although they try to look interested i know that my situation doesn't really interest them, and i do sometimes wonder how things may have been different but then i look at my girls and i know i wouldn't change them for the world, perfect or not, i mean who is anyway???

Hi Tommy:

My son, Andrew, was born at 24 weeks and 3 days on January 15th. He weighed 1 pound 9 ounces (just an ounce smaller than you were). He reached his 2 pound milestone last week and is doing better and better. He really likes his mom's milk, though he gets it through a tube in his stomach. He was born at the hospital where his mom and I are registered nurses in Mississippi, but had to be sent to a hospital in Louisiana for a minor heart surgery a few weeks ago. His mom is still at home and I've returned to work so I can take my time off when he comes home. It's really hard with Andrew being another state away and only seeing him on my days off, but I know the hospital he is in is giving him superb care. I thank your dad for this web site and hope to do this for my son someday.

Hi Tommy:

My son Tyler was what they called an extreme premmie here. He was born at 23weeks, weighing 680grams. He is now 15 months old and doing really well. Its been a long road and we spent 7 1/2 months in the hospital after he was born, 4 months our next stay, and have been ammitted about 6 times since we went home from those, but all in all it has been one life chaning experience, and he is the joy of my life. He deals with many medical problems, but I tell him each day I will always be here fighting as long as he keeps fighting, and he does...14 shunt operations later due to the brain bleed (level 3

Hi Tommy:Hey what a cute preemie babe you were, my son Sharn-Alan was born at 720grams 29 weeks, he spent 86 day in nicu, and he just turned 1 in october 05, he now weighs 10kg, and is incredibly alert, happy and fast, all his friends born at the same time are all doing great too, although he was the only one out of 4 that didnt have any deafness or respitory disorder. I think all parents looking after preemie babes deserve a pat on thier back and were all very special to have been given the experience to have such special little babes. Congrats on doing so well in life and I hope the future holds wonderfull experiences for you.

Hi Tommy:

Your website is wonderful, I have a grandson (Cameran) that's currently in the nicu @ Baylor All Saints Hospital.  Cameran was born 1 lbs 12ouces on November 26,2005. Your web-site is very educational, I had no idea what to expect since I never knew anyone who had a preemie baby.  All the things you mention in your story it's so real. My daughter and I are up at the hospital everyday, it's seem like it's another place to call home. I understand about all the ups and downs, one day it's good news and the next day you are hoping he remain the same, but at soon as you walk in you know something has changed over night. But I would like to say, thanks so much for sharing your story this gives me a lot of hope for my little angle. Thanks again, Barbara Banks

Hi Tommy:  My son William was a 23 week preemie weighing in at 15 ounces and 11inches long at birth. He endured open heart surgery to close the valvue and a cricoid split to breath. After 5 long months in the NICU he is now home and doing great except for a relflux issue which makes him extremely cranky. He now weighs 7lbs and is 19inches long. He is BPD (bronchopulmanary displasia) which means I have to keep him pretty much in a bubble so he doen't get sick. Which could potentially kill him. Just wanted to share a little of my story. If there is any mother out there who is in the same situation or just starting out this was contact me at sindel101@yahoo.com It is niice to talk to someone who has been there or who is experiencing it now. Hi Tommy:

Thank you for sharing your story. I have a 4 year old boy who was born at 31 weeks. My son was 4lbs 2oz,he went down to just over 3 lbs. He has mild cp walks with a k style walker. He has just mastered walking with canes and we haven't used his walker in three weeks. We Thank god every day for the boy he has blessed us with and for answering our prayers. We since then have had a baby girl that was born full term with no problems. I just wanted to tell other parents to not be afraid to have another she was the best therapy for our son and my husband and I too. God Bless Your family.

Hi Tommy:

My name is Alyssa Kyla and I was born Aug. 2, 2004 (24 weeks gestation)at 1lb and 6oz however over the next day or so I weighed in at 1lb and 4oz. I had numerous medical issues which included yeast pneumonia, chronic lung disases, low blood pressure, ROP, congenital hypothyroidism and I even had a PDA ligation to close the tiny value in my heart. I am now one year old and I havent quite start walking but I am working on it. I am a fighter who loves to laugh. I mommy and daddy love me very much and was by my side the whole 3 1/2 months I had to stay in the NICU. When I cam home I was on a apnea monitor and I stayed on oxygen for the next 4 months because my lungs still was a little under developed. I just want to let the other preemie parents know that all is well with me and there are success stories about preemies out there. And to all the new and former preemies keep the fight strong. Be Blessed

Hi. i also had a preemie at 30 weeks. she spent 3 weeks in an incubator and came home 4 weeks later. she has since developed a few worrying infections. but in all my little one is doing good. she is now 11 weeks and after being born at 2lbs 3oz she has already shot up past 7lbs. hearing other peoples stories really helps to have the confidence to know my daughter will be ok. we are now looking forward to our first christmas together. i see my daughter as my miracle as i had pre eclampsia and doctors say had i gone 2 more days myself and my preemie would not be here today. thankyou

Hi Tommy, You have come such a long way! My name is Nicole and I am a NICU nurse at St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas. I think your story would help other mommies and daddies cope with their baby being in our NICU. I hope you don't mind me sharing this site with them as a reference. As a nurse who loves her job, it is so nice to see that these sick little ones turn into happy, healthy kids. Many thanks to your parents for all the great info. Sincerely, Nicole

I just wanted to tell you that this is a terrific website. I gave birth to a son in 1982 when I was in the 28th week of pregnancy. I had had two other sons who were very heavy at birth. My little Robby was 2 lbs. 4 oz., which was actually quite heavy for 28 weeks. But the doctors told me that it doesn't matter so much about the weight, it's how early they are. Well, it was a roller coaster ride for us. Back in 1982, this was about as early as the medical profession could save babies. After all sorts of medical interventions, even having to screen for AIDS, since he received many blood transfusions and the blood was not tested at that time, Rob is now a healthy 23 year old, who just graduated from college. I will never forget all the feelings I had when he was born so early and I still struggle with those feelings. I just look at him and I know he is a miracle. God Bless all of you who are dealing with this struggle. Mary W

Hi Tommy:

A week ago I gave birth to my first baby. She was also born at 25 weeks. She weighed 1 pound 5 ounces. She hasnt had to be on a ventilator yet and I hope she doesnt have to.

I was surfing the web to find stories to help me cope with this and came across your story. I am so glad I did because it made me feel so much better to know that you are doing so well after being in the same situation that my daughter is in now.

thank you
