Hi Tommy:

I have a little miracle just like you and his name is Austin. He was born on December 2, 1997 at 24 weeks gestation. He weighed 1 lb. and 10 oz. but dropped down to 1 lb. 3 oz. and stayed there for about a month. I am very concerned about the lack of information about premature infants that is available to parents. I have even considered writing a book depicting the "Positive" outcomes of some particular preemies. I just don't know exactly how to do that. I think your webpage is wonderful and I only wish I would have found it earlier. I am very much aware of the stress that parents of preemies have and the importance of support of other parents. We did not have much of that support. I would like to make sure that other parents get the support that we did not. Austin is now 22 months old and doing great. He is only about 17 pounds and just started walking 2 1/2 months ago, but we thank God everyday for the miracle he has performed in our lives and value everyday with Austin because we almost didn't have any of these "special" days. Thank you for what you are doing for parents of preemies everywhere!!! Heather Crapps

Hi Tommy:

You and I are birthday buddies! I was born July 26, 1963. I found your site with the yellow pages. I have 3 daughters and 3 sons and 1 grand daughter.. I bought them the Kids Internet Yellow Pages and we found you in here. My youngest daughter, Samantha, is curious about babies and things, so we are visiting many sites. Yours is the first one so far. I love your website! I like the 3D effects in it. I need to learn these little tricks as I would like to design pages for people! Im going to surf your pages some more and get to know you better. You have a great family Tommy!!! Love, Stacy and Samantha

Hi Tommy: My little miracle William Deagan Riley was born at 12:57 pm on July 23, 1999, weighing 1 lb, 10 oz. I was in my 28th week of pregnancy. I went to the hospital after having six Grand Mal seizures due to preeclampsia. He is still in the NICU of Home Hospital in Lafayette. This is week 8, day 3 of our stay in the NICU. Deagan had to be intubated for Survanta treatment, and was extubated the next day, was on CPAP for six weeks on and off, was on a cannula for ten days exclusively, and all in one day his NG (nasal gastric) feedings and respiratory treatments were discontinued. He has dealt with the pain of GERD (gastroenterological reflux disease), as well as the discomfort of an inguinal hernia which will require surgery before he goes home. He is doing so much better than the day he was born. He now weighs 3 lbs, 8.6 oz and is a very good breastfeeder. Your story is remarkable, and really gives hope to all the NICU moms and dads out here. Good luck in the future;)

Hi Tommy:

Hey you are in a group of The Most Precious, I have a granddaughter that weighed 1# 11oz. so We know. There is very little information out there on preemie babies and my idea would be to write a book of personal accounts of everyone who has had a preemie baby. We have found that to be our best information. Wendy

Hi Tommy:

We have signed your guestbook before, but at the time, our baby was still in the nicu. He is now at home and doing very well. He is well over 11 lbs and so far no problems common in micro-preemies. Please visit his webpage when you get a chance, we worked very hard on it, although it's not as good as yours.

Hi Tommy:

We thought this was the most amazing web site we have ever seen! We are 19 months now, and were born 24weeks gestation. We are doing great! We also stayed in the hospital for appox 5 months. We have minor medical needs. Hunter has a tracheostomey ( which is about to come out any day) and Haley has glasses. We loved your baby sounds, and we are making the same noises at this time also. Well thanks for the cool site! Love Hunter & Haley

Hi Tommy:

I discovered your website today. I do not have access to computers very often so the first thing I did when I could was look for support and information about preemies.

It means so much to me to be able to read Tommy's story, you see, I am the mother of a preemie. My son's name is David. He weighed 2lbs 4oz when he was born. My pregnancy was picture perfect and to this day we do not know why he came suddenly during my 28th week. I want to thank you for giving me inspiration. No one can comfort the mother of a preemie except someone who has been there before. My son is beautiful and perfect but I still wonder what he'll be like when he grows up. It helps me to see how wonderful you are doing, and gives me hope that my little boy will overcome the obstacles placed before him. Thank you.

Hi Tommy:

When I found your web site about a half hour ago, I thought that it was wonderful... and I have been crying my way through it ever since... you see, I have a Preemie that was born at 1lb. 15oz. and thirteen inches long, at 31 weeks gestation.

I had a placental abruption at 22 weeks and thought we would lose our little miracle (because that's what you precious Preemies are) but we were fortunate and was able to hold off till my water broke at 30 weeks and delivered at 31 weeks. My placenta had significantly deteriorated and the poor darling was not getting the nutrients he needed.

The Neonatologist told us that his weight and length were about that of a 26 weeker, however, we were thankful that the respirator and the O2 were only needed for the first 33 hours, after that he was, amazingly, on his own!

We did not even have a name, as we thought we had 2 1/2 months left! He was "baby boy Graham" till he was 2 days old! We never thought that we would be the parents of such a perfect miniature baby, born so small, he was the length of his daddy's hand from the tip of his head to his little bottom!

Isaiah Daniel Dean Graham came home on June 26,1999, after ten weeks in the NICU, at 4lbs. 7oz. and has continued to grow at an amazing rate. He is now 11lbs. 1oz. and is the absolute joy of our life, along with big brother Spencer David Graham who is six (and a half)! Spencer could probably talk NICU and know more, with a good part of the population. It was really hard on Spence. to have Mommy in the hospital for so long, then to have baby brother there for so long, but he is a trooper and is my number one helper and advocate for "his baby".

Isaiah had blood transfusions, Enteritis, and Acidosis while in the NICU, it was a scary, stressful time, I would get Spencer off to school and then head over to the NICU for the day, with my lunch and pump kit and "bonded" with Isaiah through "Kangerooing" and attempted nursing, talking and singing. We (my husband, Dean, Spencer and I) made a tape of us singing, talking to and reading stories to him and used a walkman and mini speakers for the nurses to play for him if he was fussy or alert and we couldn't be there.

Isaiah was at the NICU at Redlands Community Hospital in Redlands, CA. With space for fourteen babies and three Neonatologists who were on top of everything with so few babies they knew each one intimately and noticed any changes in condition immediately. The nurses were wonderful also, and taught us so much information on everything.

Learning to breastfeed after so many bottles has been a rough road but we are persevering, as breast milk is the best thing, especially for a Preemie. I caught strep throat just four weeks after he came home and he did not catch it and I continued to nurse him. I believe that the antibodies protected him. He surely was exposed to it as I was kissing him, breathing on him etc..

Well I suppose I should finish and save the rest of my "book" (as my husband is calling this letter) for another time. But Precious little Tommy... Know how much your parents love you and how much they have gone through for you. We have been made a stronger family and couple through this experience. May God bless you and your family throughout your lives. And Congratulations on your first day of Preschool today!!!

Hi Tommy:

You are an incredible little boy to have come so far. My friend just had her baby 9 weeks ahead of her due date and her baby weighed 4# 4 oz. Don't know her length yet. She is on oxygen. Please tell your mom that her and your daddy are really brave and wonderful people. I hope that my friends, will have that strength too. I am looking for someone to talk to about this. Do you think your mommy or daddy would be interested? Warm wishes, Lori

Hi Tommy:

Great page. I am happy that everything turned out so well. He is a very cute little boy. At 28 week, I woke up covered in blood. I was flown to a hospital a 100 miles away. I had placenta previa. Between hosp. stays, I stayed at the Ronald McDonald House. Where I met a number of people with preemies in the neo-natal nursery. Some one pounders and two. It scared the hell out of me. I prayed to make it to 34weeks. Each time I bled, I thought for sure I was going to have him. Well, I made it to 34weeks and 6 days. I had a 6lb. 5oz. baby boy. He spent a week in the neo for low blood sugar. I have a deep respect for all of you who had to endure months before you could take your babies home. I went crazy just with a week. Most of the babies went home, but a few died. It was a sad, joyful and educational experience I was lucky that I din't need a blood tranfusion and a hysterectomy. My doc had me convinced I would need one. I just can't have anymore children. My first son had pyloric stenosis and required stomach surgery in the first two weeks of life and my last son required all this. Of course I would do it all over again! As they are precious. My son is now 8lbs and really cute. Oh he was born July 13th. He is 8 weeks. Goodluck and Godbless you, I wish I'd have had access to this page while I was pregnant. Thank you for sharing your exp. My daughter Grace was born at 28 weeks 2lbs 10.5 ozs 15 " long. she only spent 6 weeks in the nicu and has been a miracle baby since birth. More people should be aware of what goes on in the nicu and what to expect after. Grace is now 13 months old and is the size of a 13mo and has caught up developmentally as well Praise God!

Hi Tommy:

My son Jordan has a story almost identical to yours. He is 5 years old--born April 10/94 and has a sister Faythe who was born Jun6/97. He was 13 weeks premature, 1 lb 10.5 oz, although we were told he had been starving for at least 2-3 weeks and was more the size of a 24-25 weeker.

Jordan is a totally normal (too normal sometimes!) 5 yr old, despite his 4 month hospital stay at birth. He's our treasure, as I'm sure you are too, Tommy. You have a special reason for being on this earth, and I know you have already made a positive difference in many people's lives. This website is wonderful!

Hi Tommy:

Hi! I first visited your site shortly after my daughter, Patience, was born. She was 30 weeks gest. but only 1lb 11oz. She is now a very rambunctious 2 year old. She is my angel, the light of my life. I am now expecting another and am anxious nervous. This is my 5th pregnancy in 10 yrs; I only have the one. So far things are going well. I am usually hypertensive, but my blood pressure is incredibly low this time!! I am at 20 weeks and feel great. This baby is already bigger than Patience was at birth. I have been taking baby aspirin since about 8 weeks. I don't know if that's the magic answer or not. Anyhow we are very positive things will work out fine. It was nice to visit you again. Once I have my own comp. I'll let you know how this pregnancy turns out.

Yesterday, my daughter gave birth to a little girl. The baby girl weighed 1 pound and 10 ounces. Her mother was in her 25th week. I decided to search information about pre-mature babies on the internet and found your wounderful story. It has given me some hope for little Megan Victoria. I see from your story thatlittle Megan has a long, long road ahead of her. Thank you for your story and I will visit your site again. Grandma Bobbie

Hi Tommy:This is an excellant site, one which I will be referring my students to in the near future. I am teaching a course on children at risk and have been looking for sites and I'm so glad I found yours. Through your story and photo gallery I am hoping my students learn about children "at risk" and /or "at promise". Incredible site and from the notes I see from others, you have brought significant hope to them. Keep up the good work and all the best to you, Tommy, and family.

Hi Tommy:

It was so exciting and emotional to read of your story this evening. It's wonderful to hear how you've progressed in the last five years - what an encouragement to other mommies and daddies of preemies! My husband and I are parents to boy/girl twins who are now 16 mos. old (12 mos. corrected.) They were born at 25 weeks. Brianna weighed just about exactly what you did - 1 lb., 10 oz. and was just under 12 inches long. Bobby weighed 1 lb., 12 oz., and was about 13 inches long. They both had their share of problems, but we were blessed to be able to bring them home appoximately 3 months after their birth. They are doing very well now. Bobby struggles with asthma on occasion, but has even been doing great in that area. Brianna has been a little fighter since birth and she continues to be the one who is the "furthest ahead" in her development/health issues. Please tell your mommy and daddy that this awesome tour of your "nursery" was a blessing to us and that we pray many others will be blessed and encouraged by the hard work that went into creating this web page. God bless you, and give your little sister a hug for us!

Hi Tommy:

It is great to see you doing so well. I am Dawson's mommy. He was born on April 9, 1999, 12 weeks early! His due date wasn't until July 1st. We spent 8 weeks and 2 days in NICU and came home on June 6, 1999. He weighed 3 lbs and 1 oz and was 16 inches long. When he was 3 weeks old he developed sepsis, that is a blood infection that can be fatal to preemies. I was so worried that I might lose him. The doctors were great. They gave him all kinds of things to help him. He was given something to help keep his blood pressure up, 2 different antibotics, was placed back on the vent, had a tube in his tummy. After 3 days of worry that he might not make it he came out of it. he is such a strong boy. We had to take a course of antiboctis for 30 days and he had to have an IV everyday. This was the worst part. we had to stay in NICU until it was complete. So on the last day of antibioctic we got to take him home. That was six weeks ago. He is doing well and weighs 10 lbs. i hope he grows up to be a strong boy like you. Good luck in all that you do and God bless you and your family.

Hi Tommy:

My name is Kelly, and I am going to start college next sememster and one day become a Neonatalogist, which had been a dream of mine since I was five years old. Right now I am training to volunteer in the NICU. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by all the years of college and all the long hours of work to reach my goal, but it is kids like you that are the inspiration that I need to get me through it all. Whenever I read or hear about cases like yours, I feel an overwhelming sense of happiness, and that is a feeling that I would love to feel for the rest of my life helping babies like you. I hope everything goes great for you in your future. God bless you.

Hi Tommy:

Our third child Ricky was born at 25 weeks. He weighed in at 1pound 8oz and 12 inches long. This was nearly 16 years ago, at a time when no hope for survival was given. I was having a miscarriage at our small local hospital which had no resources to handle a micro preemie.(The term "micro preemie" didn't even exist). Imagine their surprise when this somber delivery room scene produced a screaming little miracle that had an apgar score of 7! He sounded like a newborn kitten mewing. Lifeflight arrived an hour later to deliver him to University of Michigan Hospital. The doctors didn't think he would survive beyond 2 days. At 10 days when his weight had dropped to 19 ounces, things seemed pretty grim. After 2 monthes on a respirator and many of the trials and tribulations that most preemies have suffered, we brought him home at almost 4 monthes old and 4.5 pounds. Ricky only weighed 12 pounds on his first birthday and was delayed in most areas. He had to work hard at just about everything he did, but he is very patient and has a great sense of humour. Now, at 16 he is entering High Shool this fall. He makes friends easily and earns good grades. At 85pounds we don't expect him to play football but,he loves roller hockey, fishing and swims competitively. We couldn't ask for anything more! How wonderful that parents of preemies today can share experiences with other parents on web pages like this.

My daughter, Sara, was born at 28 wks, 1 lb 7 oz, 12 ins.She was on a respirator for 3 mos with BPD and hydrocephalus. At 4 1/2 mos she developed severe reflux which required a nissan and a g-tube. She finaly came home at 5 1/2 mos weighing 7 lb 4 oz. with oxygen for the next year or more. She still is tube fed at the age of 5 but is doing very well and will be in kindergarten next year. If there are any other preemie parents who are experiencing similar feeding problems, I would like to hear from you. Good luck, Tommy, and grow well! Sincerely, Robin and Sara Smith

We are the proud parents of identical twin girls. They were born April 8, 1999 at 28 weeks. They suffered from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Kirsten weighed 3lbs-7ozs and Chesley weighed 2lbs-6ozs. They both spent 68 days in the NICU and came home June 14, 1999. They both have severe BPD and spent several weeks and ventitalors and suffered from holes in their lungs. Kirsten is doing wonderful and now weighing 7lbs. Chesley is still on home oxygen but progressing everyday and weighs 5lbs-11 ozs.

Just wanted to let you know what a wonderful job you have done on your son's pages. I just delivered a little girl on May 22, 1999 at 31/5 weeks gestation. She weighed in at 3.9 and 17.5 inches long. She too is at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

She is doing pretty good, just not good enough to come home. Also living so far away from the hospital doesn't help along with 3 other children to take care of as well.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi Tommy:

I have a son that was born at 25 weeks he only weighed 1 pound and 2 ounces and was 11 1/2 inches long. He was born on May 6, 1999 and is currently in the NICU in Santa Barbara, California. He has had 2 operations, and his first helicopter ride already, he has even been on TV.

He is now a month old and has grown 1 1/2 inches and 11 ounces. I have a long road ahead of me and I'm worried about my son but he is strong and is holding on with all that he has. I go and see him everyday sometimes I cry and sometimes I smile because he looks better than the day before. Seeing stories like yours is wonderful knowing that there are success stories out there helps me through everything. You seem to be doing well and I hope that, that continues.

My due date was August 6, so the Doctors are telling me that's when he'll be able to come home, as long as he is healthy is all that I am worried about.

Hi Tommy:

Our names are Sherry and Terry Jones. We had a set of twins born July 12, 1997 at 27 weeks gestation weighting only 2 pounds 8 ounzes and 2 pounds 6 ounzes. Seeing your web page brought back many memories and some of them I guess alot we tried to forget. Jeremy and Kaitlyn were born with many problems and required alot of ventaliton. They both had BPD closure and Kaitlyn had 4 more surgery's to require a shunt. The road is long and hearing and seeing story's such as yours making every step a little easier. Feel free to email me anytime. We are making our own little web page on the twin maybe we can keep in touch and compair similarities.

Hi Tommy:

I had a baby in July that was 3 months premature, it was the hardest event my husband and I had every had to deal with. I guess my husband had the hardest time of all he almost lost the baby and I. My son Garrett was 3lbs 3ozs he was so tiny, I was scared to death he wasn't going to make it. He had several problems and one being a deathly virus had gotten into his blood and we were luckly they caught it in time. He is now 10 months old very healthy at 19lbs 6ozs and we are so proud of all the fighting he did to stay with us and for the Lord listening to our prayers. I would like to know if there is any web site that has a chat room so I could give some other parents hope and to give them someone to talk to that can understand what they are going through. I hope to hear from you soon. I am glad that things turned out for both of us.

Hi Tommy:

My daughter's name is Gabriele. She was born at 24 weeks...She is my little ANGEL! She weighed 1LB. 8oz. when she was born. It was the most frightening experience I have ever been through! She was in the hospital for 4 1/2 months, and through it all, I kept a day by day journal. I don't know why or how, but Gabriele seems to have escaped all of the (so called) problems, that might come with having a premature child. (Sounds like you, Tommy!) It's hard for me to understand sometimes...especially when I see children living with life long effects of being born too early. It breaks my heart to see that...and yet, everyday when I look at my daughter...I gasp for air, and say "Thank You God" for this miracle!

Gabriele is truely an inspiration! She is 3 years old now and is doing great! They said she might be behind on certain things due to her prematurity...but they were wrong! She is actually ahead on alot of things! She is as cute as a button and brings a whole lot of joy to so many people! She shines like a star when she smiles! We definitely hit the lottery!

My husband and I have been on all sides of the table! We lost a child who was born premature...and we know too well the heartache that follows! We also have a child born at full term who is happy and healthy! We would be glad to help anyone going through a tough time! I know it helped us to talk to people who had gone through the same thing! (Tommy..We think your website is wonderful!) Our Email address is applebutton@eri.net BE STRONG!

Hi Tommy:

Thanks for such a wonderful site, your daddy did a fantastic job. I have just made my first birthday after a very rocky start. I made my appearance on 29th April 1998 13 weeks early and weighed in at only 650g thats 1lb 7ozs I spent a total of 15 weeks in NICU and had just about every problem us preemies can develop, like you I was slow to gain weight a problem I'm afraid I still have but I made it to 13lb 8oz for my 1st birthday.

I am trying very hard to crawl at the minute and have much to mummy and daddys delight managed to roll over for the very first time today, they were very encouraged by how well you have done and by all the other preemies stories.

Mummy would just like to add that reading your story was like dejavue as she had a classic c-section and people made silly comments about how lucky she was not to get really big and not to have to give birth naturally as it hurt alot its only now that she can think about the whole thing with out crying but every now and again I know she still feels cheated, angry and jealous of other pregnant women.

I am mummy and daddys first born and to hear that your sister was born full term is also of great comfort, I arrived due to pre-eclampsia and although it can happen again it gives them hope. I hope you continue to do well and enjoy your life with your sister. Lauren Reid Age 13 months (10months corrected) I have now also managed to reach the 1stone or 14lb 1oz milestone (I know you parents of us preemies are obsessed with our wieghts!!!)

Hi Tommy: I've enjoyed your story. We are the parents of a 25 week 2 day old preemie, as well. Matthew and Michael were born April 2, with a due date of July 14. Michael survived only 18 hours, with a grade IV bleed. Matthew's head sonos have all been normal, Thank God. Matthew, at 7 weeks, just recently came off the ventilator and remains on CPAP. He is on phenobarbitol and ativan for seizures in hope of controlling his episodes of desaturation and bradycardia. It was so good for me to read your story. I'm tiring of the roller coaster of emotions involved with the NICU stay. Some days are much harder to tolerate emotionally than others. It helps so much to visit with those who are going thru the same thing. Your positive message was uplifting. Thank you and may God bless all of you. Melaney

Hi Tommy:

You have a wonderful web site. I think it is great that the internet has provided an avenue for these wonderful children, gifts from God, to have the recognition they so rightly deserve! Ashley was born at 25 weeks gestation and weighed 1lb 14 oz. She is 3 years old now and although she still suffers from BPD (mostly she gets a lot of pneumonia), she is doing very well! We are blessed to have her as are your parents to have you!! Best regards from The Nelson family!

Hi Tommy: It was so very nice to hear your story and your happy ending. My niece was born at 27 wks, 1lb 6oz. She is 6 days old today, May 12, 1999. Her name is Jennifer Lynn. I know we have a long road ahead of us, but God is gracious and will see us through. You are a real fighter and she seems to be one too. I hope you have a wonderful life. I know you and your sister have lots of fun together. I have a 4 year old boy and 20 mo. old girl and they never slow down. Remember to be so thankful for what you have, 'cause Mom & Dad know what a miracle you are. Jennifer's mom does not have access to the internet, but I am gonna print your story for her to read too. Hi Tommy:

I'm glad to see that you are doing so well. It gives me hope for my twin daughters. They were born at 25 weeks weighing 1-11 and 1-6 after a placental abruption. We went through all of the same ups and downs, infections, oxygen levels rising, etc., etc. They came home the exact day they were due. They have been doing well ever since. They got through winter with only 1 small cold and ear infection. They are 9 mo.actual and 5 mo. adjusted right now. They are starting to roll over and stand up if you hold them. They are about 1 1/2 lbs. apart now. The bigger is more advanced developmentally but I have hopes the little one will catch up. I love you website! Keep the wonderful information coming. You are such a cutie!!

Hi Tommy:

You are such a big boy now! You were even smaller than our son, Steven. He weighed 2lbs 6.6 oz, and was 15 inches long. He was born April 21, 1999 10 weeks premature, due to pre-eclampsia. He is presently 11 days old,and doing very well. He was only intubated for 2 days. He is breathing completely on his own now, not even cpap. We are very fortunate that our son has not had any major problems. A lot of the feelings described in your story sound familiar. We miss Steven very much, and can't wait until he comes home, probably sometime in June. Thank you for this story, it gives us something to go by, because we never dreamed of having a preemie, and know very little about them. We are glad you are doing so well now, and hope that our son will do as well. Jim and Beth Grant

Tommy, So glad to hear you are doing well! We have a daughter named "Hope" who was 4 months premature and was 1 pound 3 ozs. She dropped to 1 lb 1oz and had to be revived twice. She was in Buffalo Childrens Hospital ICN for 4 months. LOTS of ups and downs! She was on a venitator for 3 months and came home on oxygen. The nurses and doctors were great! Hope is doing well- she is 18 months old but still only 17 pounds. She is walking (half running) and is into everything! She is a little behind in her development and is not vocalizing as much as she should, but no other problems. Best of luck and thanks for a great site. We welcome responses from anyone who would like to contact us .

Hi Tommy: My daughter Veronica was born in March at 35 weeks. She was growth restricted (IUGR) due to my preclampsia, and weighed in at 4 lbs. She spent two weeks in the NICU at UCSD hospital and is now home. I am so thankful that your parents were willing to share your story and am glad that you are doing well. In addition, I want to send special thanks to your mom, Natalie, for sharing her experience with breastfeeding. Veronica and I had a very rough time getting started and now thanks to a very supportive husband, the exceptional staff in the NICU, and shared experiences of other moms and preemies, we are doing well. Hi Tommy:

I had the experience taking care of preemies during my residency training in Pediatrics. It's a very difficult and enormous task considering the complications these babies go thru. In our hospital, the youngest premature who survived was 25 weeks gestation who was about 800+ grams. She's now 4 years old. She's doing well except for some visual defects. It gives me a wonderful feeling see her now, for having been a part of the day to day struggle she had to go through.

Hi Tommy: I am a NICU nurse in a level three unit in Springfield, Illinois. It is sometimes hard as a caregiver to realize what parents are feeling when they have a premature baby...But your dad has done an excellent job of telling the story about your struggle. You are a very lucky little boy, It sounded like you were a very sick little man. Thanks dad for telling your story...I will refer parents in our unit to your web page. I'm sure they will find it a comfort and a resource.

Hi Tommy: Visiting your sight was a walk down memory lane for me. My youngest daughter, Brianne, was born 16 weeks premature and weighed in at a "hefty" 1 pound and 6 ounces and was 11 inches long. She spent 103 days in the NICU and actually made her homecoming 9 days before her due date! She did extremely well. She's going to be 8 years old next week. She is a visually impaired young lady, but compensates very well. She is normal in every other way. The first 4 years were the hardest - so many doctors, hospital stays, etc..... but much better now. I think it is wonderful that this is available to new preemie parents. The "networking" and information just wasn't available back when she was born.

I loved reading your whole story. I have a brother who is a little younger than you. He wasn't a preemie, but he had an intraventicular bleed at 10 hours old, and so we've been down the NICU route too, although not nearly as long. I was so very happy to hear how well you're doing. My brother seems to be doing great, but as I'm sure Mommy and Daddy can tell you, it is hard to not wonder every day. I love hear good stories!

Hi Tommy:

My daughter, Anika Steenstrup, was born July 8, 1998, at 28 weeks gestation. Your father has done a great job documenting what it was like in your first months as a NICU resident. And it's wonderful to see the pictures of your development. You'll never believe you were so tiny. I already can't believe my baby was 2 pounds 6 ounces at birth. At 16 pounds 3 ounces, Anika is doing so fine at 9 months (6 months corrected age), it's hard to believe she is a premie. Good luck as you follow life's wonderful journey.

Hi Tommy:

What a wonderful and inspirational story. I have read it at least ten times since going through our current ordeal just to get inspiration and hope with our situation. My son Justin Gerard Wilson was born on February 20, 1999 at 26 weeks gestation. He has had his up days and his down days but he seems to be doing well going into his 3rd week in the NICU. This is a WHOLE new world as I am sure it is for any parent whose child is born prematurely...you never knew this world existed into you are thrown up in it. I have several good friends who are pediatricians and two are studying neonatology but until now I just knew they were going into a field where they would be dealing with multiple births and babies..little did I know....I would like to chat with any parent who is curently going through the NICU experience..Tommy's story is an inspiration to us all...

I was browsing around and found your site I had a daughter Zoe born in Dec 94 at 35 weeks at 16 hours old she had a colapsed right lung. She had a chest tube and resperator put in on Christmas Eve she had 3 other sisters at home worried about her. Now she is 4 and doing ok she has had phnemonia and RSV. She does have some learning disorders and some speach problems but other than that she is a totally normal girl. She has a little sister Chloe that when she was at 23 weeks my water broke but because I don't go into labor on my own with a lot of steroids and medicine I was able to keep her in until 37 weeks she was only 5lb. but has had know problems she will be 2 on March 31. Today I was looking around for some advice to help a couple who have a 19 month old baby girl who was born at 25 weeks and are now expecting a full term baby any day. I know the experience this time is going to be very, very different---but would love to have some first hand advice to give them. Thanks, Vicki

Hi Tommy:

I've enjoyed your web page and it brings back so many memories of almost a year ago March 15, 1998. Our son Michael was born 5 weeks premature. He had to stay in the NICU unit for 5 weeks. He was born with a 4th degree head bleed and had seizures and also had enlarged ventricles which caused his head to enlarge. He endured numorous lumbar puntures, medicine that helped reduce the amount of cerebral fluid the brain produces and medicine for seizures. Because of the bleed he was at a greater risk for cerebral palsy and other developmental problems. So far a year later Michael has not developed cerebral palsy . He is off all medicines and never had to have a shunt put in. He is truly our Miracle Baby. He is developing like he should with his adjusted age. He is into everything and that is what we want to see. He is the greatest gift that God has ever gave us along with our 11yr.old and 7yr. old.

Hi Tommy:

We are glad to read you are well. Your story is a source of hope for our little one. Still in the Hospital, Mikie, was born at 22 weeks at a weight of 14.5 oz.

He is now seven months old and striving to grow. He has become quite an inspiration for us and our family. We wish you and your family the best.

Hi Tommy: You have a most encouraging site. Our little Ashley was born in 12/97 weighing 1 lb, 1oz. The doctors seem to think that she needs surgery to install a g-tube for feeding. However, she comes from a family with small women (less than 5 feet tall), but there seems to be very little information about how the parents genes impact the early size expectations. Any readers have any sites?

I am so pleased with your progress. Your are a great inspiration for me and my daughter Tatum. Tatum was born at 25 weeks gestation weighing 12oz.(340grams). Tatum was in hospital for seventeen weeks. She went home on oxygen, apnea and 02 monitors. She weighed 3lb 12oz.

Tatum was lucky to be born at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas. Baylor has an excellent staff who cared and truley loved my daughter and supportedand informed me while she was there. She weighs 9lbs. 07ounces at five months(ga). So far Tatum has No major medical problems. Every day is more blessed and beautiful than the last.

Hi Tommy:

Thank you so much for the wonderful website. My wife and I had a premature baby on January 24th. Spencer Everett Bowles. He was 1 lb. 10.4 ounces at birth. I could have written this entire story up to three weeks. It is so good to see other people having the same experience and feeling not so alone. I will try to print this story and send it to my wife. We were fortunate to have had this experience when out of town for the weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. We ended up at one of the top three neonatal ICU's in the United States. Harris Methodist Medical Center ( Ft. Worth). Thanks again for your wonderful page. It really is reasuuring to see the identical experience with a great outcome. We will take little Spencer any way God chooses to give him to us. We are truly blessed by having Spencer no matter what the outcome. Very truly, Bruce Bowles

Hi Tommy: My son Vinson was born on 11-04-90. I had a incompetent cervix. He was 25 weeks gestation & 1 LB, 12 ozs. He's now eight years old. He's a handsome, very bright and normal child. He's my miracle baby. He's in the third grade, he gets straight A's. He underwent, hernia surgery, eye surgery (cosmetic only), tonsil removal. The only lasting effects from premature birth is nearsightedness in one eye. He wears glasses. He is a natural athlete. He plays basketball and takes karate. He is a computer wiz. He beats everyone playing nintendo and play station. I thank God for my son.

Hi Tommy:

Our son was born on November 19,1988. He was at 23 weeks gestation. He was born at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He was hospitalized for 8 months total. He had two major surgeries in that time, where he was flown from Tallahassee to Shands in Gainsville, Fl. He was on oxygen, "G" tube, and needed a whole host of other necessities to sustain his littel life. I vividly remember not being able to hold Joseph for the first month. He was smaller than my husbands hand. He weighed in at 1 pound, 4 ounces. We lived moment by moment, hour by hour, and so on. Our experienced a literal roller-coaster life. But, we are very happy to report, through it all, as I write this letter, Joseph is doing very well. He is now 10 years old. He is off "G" tube feedings. There is no need for supplimental oxygen. He is walking, talking, and though blind, his cognitive development is soaring. He takes on many challanges with zest. He is doing well in school. He loves horseback riding, music, and the numberous friends who surround his daily life. We are truly blessed to have Joseph. He continues to get stronger everyday. And his ability to learn has no limits. As his Mom, I could go on and on telling you our story, but I feel you have walked that road as we have. We seem to be unique families, whereby, whatever the situation, we weathered it, and came out victorious, and that much stronger. God Bless All Of You, It was a true pleasure viewing your web page. Tommy: We wish you the very best life has to offer. Sandy

Hi Tommy:

I'm so glad i came across your web page.I'm very happy that everything is going well for you. Your page has given me encouragement that i need. I lost ababy boy March 27,1998 due to an incompentent cervix. i am pregnent again (26 Weeks), but am at risk for premature delivery. If that were to happen I kind of feel like things would be diferent this time and like i could handle it as long as my baby was as healthy as you. Sincerely, Mary

I came accross your website after performing a search for Placenta Abruption. I am currently 12 weeks into my pregnancy with a minor placenta abruption. At this point, I (nor my OB) do not know if it will eventually worsen. I did find Tommy's story to give me hope. It reminded me of the fighting spirit that the little ones possess. I pray that everything works out fine for me, but if I do deliver prematurely, I am happy to know that there is a web support system. Thank you for placing your story.

Hi Tommy:

I have enjoyed your page ever since my daughter Sarah was born premature on 11/30/95. She was born 8 weeks premature and weighed 2 lbs 6 oz. Due my preeclampsia, the doctors felt that she could get more nutrition outside the womb. After 7 long weeks in the NICU at The Children's Hospital at Strong in Rochester, NY, Sarah came home at all of 4 pounds. I can never thank the medical community enough for all their care, both pre-natal and post-natal. We owe them for her life. Sarah is now a big sister. That pregnancy went to term with no life threatening complications. Sarah is a precocious little girl who loves all things "girlie". Hair, make-up and clothes are a large portion of her life. Loves her sister, her cats, her dollies, "Arthur" on TV, and most of all, gymnastics and dancing. She is a normal, happy 3 year old. Again, thanks for this page. I hope it gives all parents of preemies hope for the future.

Hi Tommy:

I wrote you back in Feb or March of last year telling you about my miracle Jeremy. He was born 15 weeks early at 1 pound 11 ounces... just an update that prayer works, Jeremy celebrated this first birth 3 weeks ago and at his first year check up the doctor told me that most "normal" babies are not as healthy as Jeremy and that as far as weight, height, physically and mentally he is totally caught up to his age group.... What a joy he is to our lives!!

Thanks again so much for the website. I found it when Jeremy was still in the hospital and it helped me so much to know that baby and parents get through it

Hi Tommy:

My son just celebrated his 1st birthday, and I remember thinking that we'd never get here. Tyler was born at 3 pounds 12 oz and 34 weeks. He spent a month in the NICU. I had toxemia, and it was a close call for both of us. It is amazing to look at the pictures and remind ourselves that it was only a year ago. So much happens in a year. Your family has great spirit and it is such an encouraging place parents of preemies can visit. I belong to a NICU parent support group at our hospital, and I can't wait to tell them about your web site! God bless you all! I have the upmost respect for the families and babies who have been in this situation!

Hi Tommy:

I just found the web site your Dad set up - I think it is great and very encouraging for parents of premature babies. My first son was born May 6, 1996 at 36 weeks and delivered by c-section and weighed 5 lbs 15 ozs.; he did great and came home right away. My second son was born November 22, 1997 at 30.6 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. 14 ozs. Due to limited room at Toronto's hospitals we had to be moved by ambulance to another town (very stressful). Luckily, he did well and was transferred to a hospital closer to home. He moved from the NICU to a Special Care Nursery. After 6 weeks, we brought him home. We have had a few scares with him this fall, but so far doing great. He will be 1 year corrected next week (14 months chron.)

It is so wonderful to have support on the Internet - I just wish I had the time last year to find this information. It still really helps and is very encouraging. Thanks!

Hi Tommy! My name is Angela. I work as a nurse in a NICU just like the one that cared for you when you were born prematurely. It's wonderful that your parents could share your hopeful story with other parents who also have babies born very early. It sounds like you did a great job getting better while in the NICU. You're a very strong boy, keep up the good work! To Tommy's parents, god bless you for all that you've been through, and for all the commitment you've given your child. Hi Tommy:I have a little girl who will be 5 in February, she was born 11 weeks early at 1lb. 15.5 oz and 14 inches long. She was born on 2/4/94, her actual due date was 4/15. She is very healthy, happy and active. Sometimes she amazes me with her knowledge. She was my first child and it was a scary experience for my husband and I. I commend you for this web page. I wish we would have known more information on preemies at the time. Books just didn't seem to help.

On a routine office visit the Doctor discovered that I had High Blood Pressure. I had preeclampsia with HELP syndrome and was admitted to the hospital. Two days later, my daugter was born by emergency c-section. The doctors still cannot explain it. My daughter was in the hospital for 2 months, with the ventilator out on the second day, what a fighter. We had the usual ups and downs, a blood transfusion and a collapsed lung, but mainly she needed to grow. She came home on Good Friday, just in time for Easter. Not an easy way for the 1st grandchild on both sides to enter the world. Happy New Year and thank goodness for all NICU units.

Sincerely, N.L. Whybrew P.S. My daughter was a late potty trainer too, be patient, it will come soon

Hi Tommy: I'm new at this so I hope you all get my story . . . It does my heart good to hear of so many healthy, happy premies and their families. Our second daughter, Nicole, was born at 24/25 weeks of 10-19-94 at 1 lb. 9 oz. and 12 1/2 inches long. She is a joy. Reading all the stories brings all the emotions back; they are always there, but the focus is on now. At 21 weeks I was 4 cm dialated so a cerclage was performed the next morning. Samantha was 18 months old at the time and I was confined to couch. Looking back I don't think the doctors (in their hearts) felt the pregnancy would be viable. At almost 24 weeks I started bleeding and was admitted for steriods and elevation of my feet, etc. After three days, Coley needed to be born. She couldn't wait and the physical toll the meds were taking on my heart was beginning to become worrisome. So, at 24/25 weeks Coley was born. She cried right away - just to let everyone know she was tough. She was intubated for quite a while, CPAP, fought numerous infections, - simillar to what your children have been through. Looking back, though, during the four months that she was in NICU we never sobbed, never the "why us/her". There were tears, watching her struggle for even the most 'simple' tasks, when it seemed that every time she was touched it caused pain, not feeling that she was ours, but belonging to the (wonderful) staff in NICU. I always felt that I had to be strong for her; Coley was doing all the work and we had to be strong for her to rely on. Nicole came home 1 month after her due date at 5 lbs. 8 oz. There were therapists to help with strengthening her mouth muscles, learn to sit, crawl, etc. She is a happy, tenacious, friendly little girl who has sooooo much energy. Coley turned 4 yrs. old on 10-19. She is articulate beyond her age. Her sister, Samantha, is 5 1/2 and Kimberly is 2 1/2. They are each a special blessing. If anyone has a premie approx. Coley's age that is noticing some behaviors such as lack
