Video Capture pt. 2
My Sony Handycam successfully captured the video from my VCR . . . however, the sound capture is less than ideal.
My next attempt to capture some of these old tapes will be to connect my VCR directly to the WinTV 250 capture card.
Note that the movies I've taken and transfered directly from the Handycam look great -- and the interactions between my software and the new camera via the firewire connection are awesome. I guess though, that the Handycam is not going to help much on capturing old tapes.

Video Capture
I recently purchased a new camcorder -- which has reinvigorated my interest in capturing video to the computer.
One of the things I've been trying to do is import my old VHS-C tapes into the computer in MPEG2 format. I've tried a few techniques, including using the old camcorder with my WinTV 250 capture card and using the pass-through feature of my new Sony Handycam. Using the WinTV 250 seemed to capture better video which actually was a bit of a surprise.
Some tapes seem to have a lot of "noise" in the video when played through the old camcorder. Unfortunately, the tapes with the most noise look to be some of the tapes I was most interested in capturing.
I've found that playback of the old tapes is better using my VCR than through the old camcorder. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to move the VCR close to the computer for a direct capture. The solution I'm trying at the moment, is capturing the VHS-C footage using the new camcorder connected to the VCR.
Stay tuned for an update on this experiment . . .
